I have seen and used a number of Samson portable PA systems in recent years, including several from the Expedition range as it has developed. But I have not yet come across a unit so well designed and presented as their latest offering in the Expedition Express XP360B. As this review will further explain, this compact powered speaker redefines what one little unit can achieve with a 2 way speaker enclosure and 6 inch woofer.
ALL IN ONE
As a ‘portable PA’ this unit really goes one step further to ensure there is very little to carry. It operates as a single, stand-alone speaker, which can be pole mounted or used as a wedge on the ground. If you required more volume, you can easily run a line out from the first unit and chain it with more Expedition Express units. You get a line input on 6.5mm jack, a microphone input on XLR both with separate volumes as well as an MP3 input on a 3.5mm jack, again with its own volume control. But, it gets better, you can access the MP3 option with the built in Bluetooth receiver, meaning you can have wireless control of your music through the Expedition Express. This function alone makes it so cool if you’re hosting a party or gig and want to mobile DJ as you hang out and socialise.
PLAY IT ANYWHERE
With the Bluetooth connectivity you are able to run your mobile phone, tablet or even your laptop directly into the PA without the need of any cables. So, given that Samson has removed the need for cables in this instance, it gets even better when you discover that there is a rechargeable battery built into the box allowing you to run the Expedition Express completely wireless. This is a great option for those who need amplification outdoors when a power supply is not available, wedding celebrants and sporting clubs are going to love the convenience of up to 8 hours of battery operation with the need to recharge. That said, you could use it for busking or even an impromptu party in the back yard or down at the beach over summer. The possibilities are just endless. It does lack a little in the bottom end when you really want it, but for the compact nature, you really can’t expect it to deliver too much. Weighing all of about nothing, and taking no time at all to set up, this is going to be a really good option for those looking for a portable PA option when power is not always an option.
