Face The Music today opens applications for the 10 workshops on offer as part of the two day conference. Designed to focus on skill sharing and exploring the creative process, the workshops will give participants opportunities to meet and discuss ideas with some of Australia most talented and fascinating composers including; Kirin J Callinan who will use demonstration, participation and manipulation to illustrate how he programmes those loops and makes his signature sound. He will guide audience members to prove how you too can sound strange, beautiful and unique with the help of technology. The APRA Masterclass will be hosted by one of Australia’s biggest exports Hiatus Kaiyote’s Nai Palm, this masterclass will be limited to 8 selected artists and applications are open to all.
There will also be special Keynote from Independent music guru Steve Albini. Steve is one of the most respected figures in the international independent music scene. A respected artist, music journalist, industry commentator and recording engineer, Steve is a champion of independent music business. He is regularly quoted by music media for his views on topics ranging from piracy to crowd funding to royalties and recording. As an Engineer, his unique philosophical and technical approach is affirming for independent artists – his preference for analogue over digital recording and a “punk– rock” attitude has ensured him a lasting sonic signature across the industry. He has engineered over 1,500 albums including for some of the world’s most seminal and pioneering rock acts such as Nirvana, the Pixies, PJ Harvey and The Stooges. Steve Albini will deliver the keynote address at Face The Music 2014.
Highlighting the event is an exclusive Q&A with the very talented Gossling, as pictured above. Gossling is winning fans across the world with her uniquely delicate voice and sultry indie-pop tunes. After a series of sold-out intimate showcases across the UK, alluring performances supporting Vance Joy, her startling debut at SXSW, performing at the APRA Awards with legendary Colin Hay, and featuring in Time Magazine US, the singer-songwriter has finally migrated home in time for spring for a national headline tour and a special appearance at Face The Music. Gossling’s vocal quirkiness has set her apart from other contemporary artists, underpinned by music that has moved with the times; transitioning from a folky leaning to include elements of electronic synths and textures. Herdebut album, “Harvest Of Gold” was undoubtedly one of 2013’s best Australian releases, (“Joyous, honest and dreamy” - Harper’s Bazaar).
